F120 Scott Volumeter

Category:

The F120 Scott Volumeter determines the bulk (apparent) density of free-flowing powdered materials by the Scott volumeter method.

Powder passes a replaceable 1.18 mm / 18-mesh sieve, cascades over four glass baffles, and fills a calibrated 25.00 ± 0.03 cm³ cup through a 60° square stainless-steel funnel. The F120 then tares and weighs the cup on a built-in load cell and calculates:

ρ = m / V

The Scott apparatus meets the geometry required by the cited monographs. The F120 control unit adds guided operation, on-instrument weighing, automatic calculation, and a printed or networked report — without changing that geometry.

Highlights

  • Named-standard Scott method — ASTM B329, ASTM B873, ISO 3923-2, EP, and USP Chapter 616 Method II on one instrument;
  • Guided touchscreen workflow — 4.3-inch capacitive display walks the operator through tare, fill, level, weigh, and report;
  • Built-in weighing — 0.01 g readability, 0–500 g range; no separate balance required for routine tests;
  • Automatic density result — ρ = m / V is calculated on the instrument from the calibrated 25.00 ± 0.03 cm³ cup;
  • Instant QC record — built-in thermal printer and RS485 Modbus RTU;
  • Monograph geometry — 1.18 mm / 18-mesh sieve, four glass baffles, 60° square lower funnel, 19 mm funnel-to-cup gap.

Standards

F120 is built to comply with the following standards. This is the compliance basis of the instrument.

StandardWhat it covers
ASTM B329Apparent density of metal powders and compounds using the Scott volumeter
ASTM B873Measuring the volume of the apparent-density cup used in ASTM B212, B329, and B417
ISO 3923-2Metallic powders — Determination of apparent density — Part 2: Scott volumeter method
EPEuropean Pharmacopoeia — bulk density of powders, measurement in a volumeter
USP Chapter 616 Method IIBulk density and tapped density of powders — measurement in a volumeter

Results are reported as bulk (apparent) density. Use g/cm³ for ASTM / ISO work, or g/mL when an EP / USP method is cited (1 g/mL = 1 g/cm³).

Key functions

Guided touchscreen operation

  • 4.3-inch TFT color display, 800 × 480, capacitive touch;
  • Step-by-step prompts for tare, fill, level, weigh, and report;
  • Live mass and status on screen;
  • On-screen numeric keypad for a stored tare or an external mass.

Built-in weighing and automatic calculation

  • High-resolution load cell, 0.01 g readability, 0–500 g range;
  • Automatic calculation of bulk (apparent) density, ρ = m / V;
  • Cup volume used in the calculation: calibrated 25.00 cm³;
  • 0.01 g is the weighing readability; the reported quantity is density from the calibrated cup.

Calibration and profiles

  • Automatic or manual zero calibration;
  • Span calibration with standard weights;
  • Profile storage for cup tare and configuration recall.

Reports and integration

  • Built-in thermal printer for timestamped test reports;
  • Configuration backup and restore;
  • RS485 Modbus RTU for a laboratory or production host.

How F120 runs the test

  1. Tare — Weigh the empty cup on the built-in load cell, or recall a stored tare.
  2. Place — Seat the cup under the lower funnel (funnel-to-cup distance 19 mm).
  3. Fill — Feed free-flowing powder onto the 1.18 mm / 18-mesh sieve. The powder passes four glass baffles and the 60° square funnel until the cup overflows.
  4. Level — Scrape the overflow with a straight edge held perpendicular to the cup rim. Do not pack or gouge the powder.
  5. Weigh — Clear the cup exterior. The load cell determines net mass to 0.01 g.
  6. Report — F120 calculates ρ = m / V, displays the density, and can print the result or send it over Modbus.

Scott apparatus

The measuring path is the classical Scott layout implemented on F120.
